Macular degeneration or age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a medical condition that results in a loss of vision in the center of the visual field due to damage of the retina.  The macula is what allows you to tasks such as thread a needle, read small print and street signs.  This condition is a major cause of visual impairment and blindness in adults over 50 years old.

Macular degeneration is diagnosed by characteristic yellow deposits, or drusen, in the macula.  These deposits can be easily seen during a routine eye exam with your ophthalmologist.  Although the presence of a few small “hard” drusen are normally seen in most people over 40, the presence of numerous large “soft” drusen in the macula is a common early sign of AMD.  Currently there is no proven cause of this condition, but there are a number of predisposing factors.  Increased age,  prolonged smoking, and low vitamin A and E in the diet have been studied as potential risks.
